About Chelsea

Hey! My name is Chelsea and I am a professional musician and music educator from Philadelphia! I have spent over 20 years working on my craft, performing at various venues throughout the city and collaborating with talented musicians both on and off the stage.

I’ve earned a Bachelors degree in Vocal Jazz Performance and a Masters degree in Music Education from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where I spent my days studying the styles and teachings of Classical, Jazz, Musical Theater, RnB, Rock, Motown, and Soul music. While my Voice is my primary instrument, I do have over 10 years of experience playing and teaching several other instruments such as guitar, flute, piano, and ukulele!

When I’m not teaching privately, I spend my time teaching interactive music and movement classes to students in daycares or preschools throughout PA, NJ, and DE, as well as general music education in primary and secondary schools around Philadelphia! My experience working alongside my students has helped shape my warm, patient, and articulate approach to teaching all ages, whether we’re in a group class or private studio lesson.

Chelsea Gault Profile
What is a musical obstacle that you remember overcoming? How did you overcome it?
Oh! A musical obstacle I remember overcoming very fondly is finally being able to create a sound playing the flute! My instructor gave me a packet of simple songs to okay and one of the pieces was a simple arrangement of Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter. I desperately wanted to play that tune but I couldn’t remember how to play the notes to do so. After my second lesson and several reviews of which patterns were necessary to play the correct pitches, I was able to play this song. I couldn’t put the flute down after that!
What style(s) of music do you like to play the most? Why?
Soul; RnB; Musical Theater; Jazz — these are the styles of music I was raised on! There is a level of storytelling involved in all of these styles that I am naturally drawn to and love performing.
What other instruments, aside from the ones you teach, have you played before?
Flute; saxophone; clarinet; trombone
When did you start playing music, what brought you to it?
I became interested in music when I was 5 years old! I was fortunate to have a music teacher at school that noticed how badly I wanted to be involved in the music program and she certainly fueled my love of performing on stage by allowing me every opportunity to learn any instrument I could get my hands on at the time. The music department was a safe space for me to express myself, set and succeed goals, and feel the pride that accompanies playing an instrument and performing on stage,
What are some musical goals you hope to achieve in the future?
I plan to perform more often, as a soloist and part of a larger ensemble or band. I really look forward to collaborating with musicians in the next few years and hopefully digging into songwriting for myself and others! I’ve always dreamed of releasing original content and I think it’s time to really commit and get some work out there.
What are some of your favorite teaching moments?
Any moment a student laughs at a mistake or makes a joke is my favorite. Music can be fun, but there are moments where even professional musicians question their abilities or skill. Moments where we poke fun at ourselves or just find something silly to laugh at are the best reminders that at the end of the day, we love music and play instruments because it’s fun.
What advice could you give to someone who has just begun learning music?
Don’t let the frustration of learning an instrument keep you from playing! There will be many moments where you will feel defeated while learning an instrument, but it’s important to remember that each moment of aggravation or struggle is an opportunity to persevere and grow! You may not feel like you’re getting better at playing your instrument, but I promise...YOU ARE!
