Frequently Asked Questions
We get a lot of questions regarding music lessons, your questions may be answered below. If you can't find what your looking for, please reach out!
Q: How much do music lessons cost?
A: You can see our current rates here. Our prices vary based on how many lessons you would like to pay for upfront, we offer a discount if you are willing to commit to more lessons. This helps our teachers to know how many lessons they can count on (and prepare for) prior to the start of the lesson. We also offer a significantly discounted first lesson (a trial lesson) designed to give the student and teacher a chance to ensure a good fit before committing to more lessons.
Q: Do all music teachers at Collingswood Sound have formal music training?
A: Yes! It is our priority to ensure all students get a high quality music education at CSound - a huge part of this is making sure each teacher is both skilled and knowledgeable in regard to their craft.
Q: What's the cancellation policy?
A: We have a 24 hour cancellation policy for both students and teachers. If a student is able to give 24 hours (or more) notice prior to the lesson start time, we will try to reschedule or credit the lesson. Teachers are also required to give at least 24 hours notice as well.
Q: How does scheduling and payment work?
A: Once we work out the day and time of a lesson, we enter it in our calendar. An invoice is then sent out via email to be payed over a secure online connection. Once we have received payment, the lesson is officially scheduled and that time will be blocked off for future lessons. After the first lesson, invoices automatically go out at the regular interval of your choosing. You can continue to pay invoices once they are sent out or you can enroll in Auto-Pay. For more on payments, see our Policies.
Q: Are there any additional discounts?
A: Yes! We offer several discounts regularly as well as significant seasonal discounts. You can see some current discounts on our rates page but for seasonal discounts, follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
Q: Is my child too young to start lessons?
A: We typically recommend children be at least 5 to take private lessons, however all children develop at different rates so exceptions to the rule can be made. If you feel your child is too young to do private lessons, they'd probably benefit from the Group Music Classes, which are specifically intended for younger students. We get this question so often, we've written an in depth blog post on it, "What Age Should We Start Music Lessons?
Q: I'm an adult beginner, do you teach a lot of other adult students?
A: Yes, our teachers have all worked with adult students before and many currently do. Learning a new instrument as an adult can be incredibly enjoyable and rewarding, and we will try to link you with the teacher who can best cater towards your learning style and schedule.
Q: How often should I schedule lessons?
A: Everyone learns differently and at their own pace, although weekly lessons are, by far, the most common option for music lessons. Even if you, the student, understand the musical concepts each week, getting into a routine with music is the most important part. For many students, developing the habit of practicing is quite difficult at first. It helps to have a teacher there each week, pushing you to build that habit.
Q: Do I need to purchase an instrument prior to the first lesson?
A: For most instruments, we can provide you with a loner for the first lesson or two, but if you (or your child) plan to continue lessons, you should purchase one. We are always happy to recommend starter instruments to anyone interested! We have compiled a list of beginner keyboards here.
Q: What is the best instrument for my child to learn?
A: The best instrument depends on what type of music you like and what type of learner you are. If you like rock music then you'll probably enjoy learning guitar. If you like jazz, you may find yourself drawn to the sax or the trumpet. Some students need to try out a few different instruments before they settle into one they really connect with. If you aren't sure, try a couple!
Q: How much should I practice?
A: Building the habit of practicing is among the most important skills you can learn through music. At first, the amount of time you spend practicing isn't as important as the consistency with which you're practicing. If you start out practicing for 15 minutes, 5 days a week, it will be easy for you to build the habit of picking up your instrument and playing it. Over time, it will feel natural to put more and more time into your practice sessions. Alternatively, if you practice once a week for an hour and 15 minutes, you'll likely find that it's difficult to retain what you're working on. In each scenario, you'd be practicing for the same amount of time per week but if you work at it more days a week, you will find it easier and easier to practice and retain more information.
