“I would recommend anyone take voice lessons…”

"Sienna is kind and caring with her students, and she is very knowledgeable about music. I was concerned my eight year old daughter was too young to focus for an entire lesson, but Sienna had no problem teaching her. My daughter is always excited to go back to lessons. I would recommend anyone take voice lessons with Sienna."

“..a teacher that is dedicated, calm, and good with kids…”

“Sean is a talented musician and teacher who taught my daughter both drums and piano. Each week, he made the lessons fun and inspired her to learn more. We recently moved away from the area, and I wish I could find a teacher that is as dedicated, calm, and good with kids as Sean is!”

No matter what your instrument, age, or goals you still may have questions...

Many people ask, how will I be able to learn to play an instrument?  It can seem so difficult if you’ve tried to tackle this task on your own. The answer to that question is the underlying answer to learning any new skill; regardless of what instrument you choose, with time and dedicated focus you can learn to master the basics of music. You've heard it before; music is like a language. We believe music is a language, and playing different instruments is often times like speaking the same language but with a different accent. To speak a language but use different accents, you are still following the spelling and grammar rules of the language, however the way you create the sounds of your accent shape the way that information comes across. Understanding the basics of technique, notes, chords, rhythm, harmony, etc. can be accomplished on any instrument.  It is this music theory knowledge that can make it easy to begin to transfer your knowledge to a new, secondary instrument.

On any instrument, we try to provide our students with a strong fundamental knowledge of music theory.  This is, of course, dependent on how each student learns. Some students benefit from exploring concepts for longer periods of time and in a variety of different ways, and some like to just quickly move from one topic to the next.  One way isn't necessarily better, but we work with each student to try to find the best approach. After exploring a musical idea, the teacher will typically present some type of practice exercise or song to exemplify the topic discussed. This is our way of really gauging the students understanding of the topic, and this will signal how long we should spend on any given topic. From there, the trajectory of your learning could take many different paths, perhaps you have a song that you feel would be helpful or fun to learn or perhaps your teacher will have some ideas or perhaps your teacher will have a different creative exercise to try. There are certain aspects of music that we know will make you a better musician - the fundamentals - and no matter what you're learning, this fundamental music will surely be a part of it. Beyond that, music lessons can be exactly what you want them to be, and if you have no idea what you want them to be, we can work with you to figure it out all while presenting you with helpful musical knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full FAQ >

Q: Is my child too young to start lessons?

A: We typically recommend children be at least 5 to take private lessons, however all children develop at different rates so exceptions to the rule can be made.  If you feel your child is too young to do private lessons, they'd probably benefit from the Group Music Classes, which are specifically intended for younger students. We get this question so often, we've written an in depth blog post on it, "What Age Should We Start Music Lessons?"

Q: I'm an adult beginner, do you teach a lot of other adult students?

A: Yes, our teachers have all worked with adult students before and many currently do. Learning a new instrument as an adult can be incredibly enjoyable and rewarding, and we will try to link you with the teacher who can best cater towards your learning style and schedule.

Q:  How often should I schedule lessons?

A: Everyone learns differently and at their own pace, although weekly lessons are, by far, the most common option for music lessons. Even if you, the student, understand the musical concepts each week, getting into a routine with music is the most important part. For many students, developing the habit of practicing is quite difficult at first. It helps to have a teacher there each week, pushing you to build that habit.

Q:  Do I need to purchase an instrument prior to the first lesson?

A: For most instruments, we can provide you with a loner for the first lesson or two, but if you (or your child) plan to continue lessons, you should purchase one. We are always happy to recommend starter instruments to anyone interested!

Q:  What is the best instrument for my child to learn?

A: The best instrument depends on what type of music you like and what type of learner you are. If you like rock music then you'll probably enjoy learning guitar. If you like jazz, you may find yourself drawn to the sax or the trumpet. Some students need to try out a few different instruments before they settle into one they really connect with. If you aren't sure, try a couple!

Q:  How much should I practice?

A: Building the habit of practicing is among the most important skills you can learn through music. At first, the amount of time you spend practicing isn't as important as the consistency with which you're practicing. If you start out practicing for 15 minutes, 5 days a week, it will be easy for you to build the habit of picking up your instrument and playing it. Over time, it will feel natural to put more and more time into your practice sessions. Alternatively, if you practice once a week for an hour and 15 minutes, you'll likely find that it's difficult to retain what you're working on. In each scenario, you'd be practicing for the same amount of time per week but if you work at it more days a week, you will find it easier and easier to practice and retain more information.
