Our Teaching Philosophy
Collingswood Sound Music aims to be a community music center in the Camden county and South Jersey area. Collingswood Sound started with singer, Sienna Averett and multi-instrumentalist, Sean Conlon, both University of the Arts-School of Music graduates. Sienna studied vocal performance and vocal health, and Sean studied guitar performance, composition, recording, and music education (for which he received a Masters of Arts in Teaching). In addition to songwriting, performing, and recording, the two found a particular love for teaching.
From Sean and Sienna:
"We have had extensive experience teaching music through various schools and companies. From working in public school classrooms to private lesson rooms, there are many similarities in how students learn music. Our goal is to take all we’ve learned from our wide array of musical experiences and utilize it in each of our lessons. We understand that every single students learns in a unique way, so we try to emphasize the auditory, visual, reading/writing, and kinesthetic in our lessons - all while relating information back to the songs that are most familiar to the student. A big problem that pushes students away from practicing is teachers forcing repertoire that the student doesn’t know how to relate to. We all know this situation, a student looking to learn the piano is forced to play song after song that they have never heard before and don’t know anything about. This style of teaching bores students and leads them to feel disenfranchised in their own music education. So what do they do? They stop practicing and eventually feel as though music just isn’t for them, their self esteem plummets. Our idea is simple: We can do this better. We know from experience that any student who finds joy in music will improve at it. So we spend time in the beginning learning what each of our students already loves about music, then we strive to center lessons and concepts around that. Practicing should never be something that you dread every day, it should be something that you look forward to. We are here to prove that - just ask any of our students."
We offer private lessons in: guitar, bass, voice, drums, piano, ukulele, banjo, trumpet, saxophone, violin/cello, music production, trombone, and more.
We also offer Group Music Classes, learn more here.
Our mission at Collingswood Sound is to provide a unique and high-quality music education to students by working with teachers who both know their craft and understand the bond between a student and teacher. Read more about our teachers!
