About Izzy

Hello! I’m Izzy. I graduated from Rowan University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, and I hold a master’s degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College. At both schools I performed in choral ensembles and operas. Roles I’ve sung include Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème, Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Adelaide in Dove’s The Enchanted Pig, Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Mag in Wargo’s Ballymore and the title role in Viardot’s Cendrillon. I’ve also been a soprano soloist in Fauré’s Requiem, Mozart’s Missa Brevis, Khvoshchinsky’s Bogoroditse Devo and Mendelssohn’s St. Paul.

I want to build a safe and nurturing space where students can create meaningful, artistic experiences. I believe music lessons should be fun, encouraging and a process of discovery, and I give my students lots of positive encouragement to express themselves through music!

How I got started

I started piano at six. My father was a pianist and inspired me to take lessons, which I kept up through high school and college. Along the way I fell in love with singing through choirs and musicals, and in college and grad school I discovered classical singing and built the vocal technique I still use in my teaching and my own practice.

What I love to play

Classical repertoire. It was hard for me to appreciate as a young student, but after years of studying it I have such respect for the art form. I’ve also always loved musicals, whether I’m in one or singing show tunes in my free time.

My advice for beginners

Progress of any kind is still a big victory! Everyone’s pace is different, and mistakes are all part of the process. Lessons are a place to express yourself artistically and have fun.

A favorite teaching moment

The “aha!” moments! Different students learn best in different ways, and it’s so fulfilling when a section that gave them trouble finally makes sense. I also love seeing a student feel confident and completely absorbed in their instrument.

An obstacle I overcame

Stage fright. From the time I started piano at six, I was terrified of performing and even stopped doing recitals for a while. Then I realized that the more you do something, the better you get. Practicing tough sections over and over built my confidence, and while I still get nervous, the nerves aren’t scary anymore.

What’s next for me

I want to inspire my students to practice and reach their goals, keep my lessons safe, nurturing and fun, and encourage students to keep music in their lives, whether as a career or a hobby.
