About Shan

Hi everyone! I teach voice, piano, guitar and ukulele. I studied vocal performance and music education at the University of the Arts, working in classical, jazz, musical theater, R&B, soul, folk and pop, but I love all kinds of music!

In lessons I focus on proper technique and music theory, while building creativity, comfort and confidence. Music is a great creative outlet, and I encourage my students to write, arrange and produce original music, too.

How I got started

I started singing as a toddler, when my mom had me sing on karaoke machines at home and at family parties. I got serious at 10 with piano lessons and my elementary school choir, then taught myself guitar and later ukulele. In middle school I started writing songs and realized how much comfort the music room gave me as a way to express myself.

What I love to play

Jazz, soul, R&B, musical theater, folk and pop. It’s what I listened to growing up, and performing any of these styles is just super fun.

My advice for beginners

Play and listen to what makes you happy, have fun and go at your own pace. Mistakes are part of the process! Keep practicing and pushing yourself, and you’ll be proud of the music you make.

A favorite teaching moment

Seeing students beat a musical obstacle they thought was impossible. Watching their faces light up when they play something they thought they couldn’t is so cool.

An obstacle I overcame

In high school my teacher asked me to learn a long, complex classical piano piece, and I was terrified. I practiced at my own pace, a few rhythms, measures and pages at a time, with breaks, and listened to recordings on repeat to get the feel before adding my own twist. Performing it for my teacher and classmates was so rewarding.

What’s next for me

I hope to release an EP of original music and collaborate with lots of other musicians on writing and arranging. My goal is to make music that connects with people and inspires them to make music too.
