About Jeff

I’m best known musically for holding down the drum throne in the instrumental prog rock group Consider the Source for the past 13 years. Together we’ve toured across the US multiple times, played a myriad of music festivals and made international trips to India, Israel and Germany.

Locally, I’m a newer member of the Philly music scene. I moved to the South Jersey area about five years ago and jumped right in with my “Learn 2 Ween” two-man tribute, where I juggled drums, bass, keys and vocals, and by filling in or joining on drums and percussion with original and cover bands around the area. More recently I launched a new project called EMM!, focused on uplifting funk and groove-based music, with a debut album of all original music coming soon.

How I got started

I started learning to play the drums at 9 years old and haven’t looked back since! I grew up hearing records played in the house and always got excited by it, sometimes banging on pots and pans with wooden spoons until my parents got me a pair of real drumsticks. Once I began playing with other musicians I found some of the best friendships of my life and a community I could grow with.

What I love to play

I love playing a wide range of styles, from funk and jazz to rock, metal and more. I especially love music that I find challenging and that pushes my abilities to the next level.

My advice for beginners

Spend time with your instrument, be creative and have fun!

A favorite teaching moment

I love when a student doesn’t expect themselves to achieve a musical challenge, or thinks it’s beyond their ability, and surprises themselves by doing it. Catching a big smile on a student’s face in those moments is always a tangible sign of personal progress and a boost in confidence.

An obstacle I overcame

One musical obstacle I’m always working on is not getting too excited and playing too fast live. It’s key for me to focus on my breathing and play from a relaxed place rather than being pumped up on adrenaline, which can be hard to notice in the moment.

What’s next for me

I look forward to pushing my musical skills beyond drumming with piano, guitar, bass and mandolin. I’ve also recently begun writing my own songs, which is a new and exciting venture!
