About Rich

I teach guitar, piano, bass, drums and ukulele, and I’ve taught a huge range of students over the years. I tried a lot of instruments as a teen and loved playing with other musicians, so I studied general music (guitar) at Cumberland County College and later classical guitar performance at Rowan University, where I was lucky enough to record with my band.

I’ve played in cover bands and in an original band called Sunset Rise, and I’m currently the guitarist in a cover band called The Waiting Game. I’ve also taught at music stores and privately, and I have a home studio where I record my own music and other musicians’ projects.

Played tenor sax in middle school and has tried a little violin. Would love to pick up sax again, or try cello.

How I got started

My dad played drums when he was younger, and my mom believes learning an instrument is great for kids. My parents got me piano lessons as a kid and sax lessons in school, and I eventually moved on to guitar, drums and bass. Without them I might not even be a musician, and they never complained about the noise!

What I love to play

Reggae, rock, classical, alternative and funk. With funk and reggae it’s all about the bass lines, and it’s so fun to play thick bass lines with some horns. I also love blues guitar, and reading classical guitar duets is always great.

My advice for beginners

Any musician has to practice to get better. For adults: you get out of it what you put into it. For kids: practice consistently. Either way, the more you do it, the more enjoyable and rewarding it becomes.

A favorite teaching moment

I really enjoy it when students are proud of themselves. When they feel like they’re accomplishing something, they’re much more likely to keep going. Younger students react to praise in the funniest ways, with big smiles and dances.

An obstacle I overcame

I used to get horribly nervous playing anywhere besides my bedroom. Like any fear, I just kept doing it until it slowly went away. If you want to play in a band, you’ll need to get used to playing in front of people, and once you’re comfortable it’s an absolute blast.

What’s next for me

My biggest goal is to play music full time, whether that’s teaching, playing in a wedding or cover band, or recording other musicians in my home studio.
